Distinguished and Famous people from Adelaide East
The eastern suburbs' connections with notable people include Norwood's political and artistic life and education at St Peter's College. The schools, homes and workplaces matter more here than a general claim that someone was born somewhere in Adelaide.
๐ค Don Dunstan
Don Dunstan represented Norwood in the South Australian Parliament from 1953. Born in Fiji, he attended St Peter's College and the University of Adelaide before entering politics. As premier in 1967โ68 and 1970โ79, he pursued legal and social reforms and supported the arts. Norwood remained part of his life after office: he opened Don's Table restaurant there with Steven Cheng. His interests had already reached the kitchen through a cookbook published in 1976.
๐ฌ Robin Warren
Robin Warren attended St Peter's College before graduating in medicine from the University of Adelaide in 1961. He went on to work as a pathologist and shared the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Barry Marshall for identifying the role of Helicobacter pylori in gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. The college remembers him among its Nobel Prize-winning former students.
๐จ Sir Hans Heysen
Before the Hahndorf landscapes, Hans Heysen studied at James Ashton's Norwood Art School. Ashton became an early supporter, buying his watercolour The Wet Road. That eastern-suburbs training preceded further study in Europe and a long career painting South Australian landscapes.
